Notice: Cameras on High School grounds
In order to better protect the security of the school community; including students, faculty, and administrators, as well as the school building and premises, MPS is installing video surveillance cameras on the outside of the building and in common areas inside the building. These cameras will be visible and will be in operation at all times. Anyone who is within the viewing area of these cameras should assume that they are visible on tapes stored by the cameras. The only school personnel who are authorized to access or view the tapes created by the cameras are the Superintendent of Schools, the High School Principal, the High School Assistant Principals, and employees that are designated within the Technical Department who operate and maintain the cameras at the direction and discretion of the Principal. Access is
limited to the purpose of preserving the security of our school community members and the buildings and facilities.
We continue to respect the legitimate privacy interests of the members of our school community and believe that this necessary addition to the building will increase the security of all without unnecessarily intruding on anyone’s privacy.
As part of this update, I’d like to reference School Committee Policy ECAF-Security Cameras which supports the use and oversight of technology, such as cameras, to ensure a safe and secure learning environment.
Don't Dump Lunch - Marblehead Schools to begin composting, diverting food from waste stream
Marblehead's Public Schools are implementing a novel recycling program in their cafeterias - food waste composting. The Marblehead Board of Health is working with the Public Schools to set up a composting program to remove food and other organic materials from the waste stream.
To date, all of the organic materials such as food waste, napkins and contaminated cardboard are included in the regular waste pickup. Beginning this month, these items will be separated from the non-compostable trash in school cafeterias and kitchens and transported by haulers to a local farm for composting. In addition to keeping food out of the waste stream, composting food waste allows farms to produce a valuable soil amendment, which can be sold to landscapers and gardeners or used on their own fields. As landfill space and waste costs rise, people will become increasingly aware of the environmental impacts of current practices, in ten years composting will be as commonplace as recycling. Andrew Petty, Marblehead's Health Director stated, “As we look ahead to our new transfer station, Marblehead can be proud that we
are taking proactive steps to remove items from the waste stream and protect the environment, "By diverting food waste from our waste stream, the Town of Marblehead is also engaging in an important climate change strategy by reducing the amount of material that is going to the waste-to-energy incinerator that emits greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. Additionally, it is an important teachable moment for our kids to learn about reducing waste and protecting the environment,” said Board of Health member Michelle Gottlieb.
Marblehead Village School, Veterans Middle School and Marblehead High School will be the first schools to begin composting in Mid January. Students will separate their waste into three new containers: food, trash, and recyclables. In addition to the food scraping and the recycling collected in the cafeteria, vegetable peelings and un-served food from the kitchen will also be collected. The Board anticipates composting 50% of the cafeteria's current waste stream by weight, thereby significantly reducing trash. Another goal of the Board is the elimination of Styrofoam trays as part of the school lunch program. Reusable trays are not currently an option due to kitchen limitations, so the Board hopes to work with the Schools to identify more environmentally friendly compostable trays. The cost of these trays is significantly

An important message from the Superintendent.
The Marblehead Public Schools have signed on with a new company, called SchoolMessenger, to replace AlertNow, the company we previously used for our electronic notifications. Similar to AlertNow, this notification system will be used for parental outreach, emergency broadcasts, and student attendance communications for K-12. It will provide us with the possibility of sending phone calls, text alerts, and emails about a range of important issues affecting your student’s safety and academic performance.
SchoolMessenger will be used to complement the district’s existing emergency preparedness procedures and to inform parents of upcoming school events such as statewide testing and parent meetings. The alert service from SchoolMessenger is proven to measurably impact student safety, parental involvement, staff communications and student attendance.
Parents should expect to receive notifications from the system soon.
Multiple modes of school communication will still be used. However, the acquisition of the SchoolMessenger system is intended to reinforce the district’s commitment to remain personally connected to parents.

Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan
Marblehead Public Schools has successfully completed and submitted its Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in compliance with the Massachusetts Anti-bullying law. The Marblehead Public Schools Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan will be reviewed and updated at least biennially, as mandated by M.G.L. c. 71, § 15. Click here to view the Plan.
